Adaptation to climate change in the Australian Edible Oyster Industry – Workshop 14 May 2010
Oysters Tasmania is assisting Dr Peat Leith from the National Adaptation Research Network for Marine Biodiversity and Resources (ARN-MBR, www.nccarf.edu.au/marine/) to organise workshops in Tasmania to provide an early opportunity to discuss and hear about the possible climate change implications for our industry.
Following a useful teleconference in April with growers and hatchery/nursery operators a single workshop for Tasmania is being held on:
Friday 14 May 2010, 11.00 am – 3.30 pm
at The New Grange, 87 High Street Campbell Town
The Tasmanian workshop is part of a national project to facilitate climate change adaptation and resilience in the Australian edible oyster industry, in terms of both policy and practice. In April and May 2010, ARN-MBR will be running workshops in oyster growing regions in NSW, SA and Tasmania with oyster growers, industry representatives, scientists and policy-makers / regulators. These workshops will be used to detail the latest scientific research on climate change impacts and vulnerabilities in the oyster industry and, with participants, to develop strategies and policy recommendations for adaptation in particular regions and across these regions.
Oyster growers and for the industry are invited to provide input to these workshops regarding the issues of greatest importance for adaptation, and what research is needed to assist with adaptation.
Additional information about the project can be found here
This is an important issue for the Tasmanian oyster industry, and Oysters Tasmania is pleased to be able to help ARN-MBR in its efforts on behalf of the oyster industry.
